Bujinkan is the name given to the organization which the current Grandmaster, Masaaki Hatsumi, heads. The name Bujinkan, which translates as the “Divine Warrior Training Hall”, was chosen by Hatsumi Sensei in honor of his late teacher, Toshitsugu Takamatsu. Budo Taijutsu is a generic term referring to the unarmed self defense system taught in the Bujinkan organization. Although the term ninjutsu is often used to describe Bujinkan, this is a bit of a misnomer as only three of the schools are actual ninjutsu styles.

The 9 martial traditions which form the core of Bujinkan training are:

Togakure-ryu Ninpo
Gyokko-ryu Kosshijutsu
Koto-ryu Koppojutsu
Kukishinden-ryu Happo Biken
Shinden Fudo-ryu Dakken Taijutsu
Takagi Yoshin-ryu Jutaijutsu
Gyokushin-ryu Ninpo
Gikan-ryu Koppojutsu
Kumogakure-ryu Ninpo

Within these nine schools you can find eighteen traditional topics of study; they include:

Taijutsu - unarmed fighting

Ninja Ken - ninja sword

Bojutsu - long and short stick fighting

Shurikenjutsu - throwing weapons

Yarijutsu - spear fighting

Naginatajutsu - halberd fighting
